Temple Wood

Location: Co. Kildare

Type: House in an estate

Stage: On site

Following the design principles of responsive, prairie-style villas, this house uses its form to respond to the land, the existing mature trees, and the historic context.

The vertical nature of the trees is complimented by the horizontal emphasis of stone and overhanging pitched roof profiles.

The house is broken into two pitched volumes that break up the scale. The volumes are used to organise external spaces around themselves;  each space offers a different character and are activated by a different room within the house.

The design is built around existing trees and the orientation of each block allows the building to sit more comfortably with the existing contours, allowing the ground floor to step down as the site falls away. This brings dynamism to the section and allows the occupant to see the site from different perspectives.
