A renovation and extension that breathes new life into a beautiful 19th-century Victorian end-of-terrace home in Ranelagh.
The kitchen and dining spaces were relocated from the basement level to the upper floor to take advantage of south-facing views across the grounds of the Royal Hospital Donnybrook.
This allows the living spaces to inhabit the principal rooms of the protected structure.
Timber fins shade the dining area from the sun and provide a privacy screen to the park and neighbouring properties. An uninterrupted connection to the wider landscape was made by placing an open-corner window above the day-bed.
The external finishes endeavour to compliment the materials of the setting. The lightweight, wood-clad extension floats at the level of the tree canopies, and rests on a moleanos limestone plinth which echoes the granite walls that enclose the garden.
