Grosvenor Square

 

The house, a Protected Structure, is situated on the north east corner of a suburban Georgian Dublin square lined with two and three-storey red-brick terraced houses.  Modern living patterns in houses of this type have refocussed the principal occupied rooms from the upper ground floor down to the lower ground floor due to proximity with the garden, and as a consequence, rooms which were not intended to be occupied as living quarters prove inadequate due to poor light, low ceilings and impenetrability. 

 

The proposal introduces a stepped sectional extension with a high level east facing window drawing light deep into the heart of the plan and providing a welcome view of the sky from the inside.  At the garden edge a lower seating area with a continuous glazed folding screen allows access to a herb garden for the kitchen.
